- It is a multi-disciplinary Discussion Group connecting companies located primarily in the Pentlands Science Park but hoping to extend to reach out to the Midlothian Science Zone in Midlothian, Edinburgh, Scotland (UK).
- It aims to connect professionals involved (or with an interest) in the field of project management and project planning.
- It has the ambition to be an open, multi-disciplinary group that could help primarily more junior members of staff with the provision of information, guidance and support in the field of project planning.
- It has the aspiration to become an inter-company network that connects project managers and planners involved in various sectors in the Midlothian Science Zone and to be a platform for experience and knowledge sharing.
Why a discussion group on Project Management?
“Every project is unique, whether in its scale, complexity, scope or ambition. But all projects have something in common – they are key to the success of every organisation“
Whether it is for their return of the investment they bring, the impact and benefits that they bring to the society, or whether they are aimed at the delivery of a new product, a new service, introducing innovation or progressing science and technology, they are at the core of every enterprise’s success.
Projects continue to fail (see this article for an interesting overview on common causes for failure: 101 Common Causes). We certainly acknowledge that even the best project managers cannot fully control all the factors, and failure is always looming. But we strongly believe that good analytics, simple and clear methodologies, systemic perspective, critical thinking, creativity (but also some discipline) may be the skills that can ensure a sound project control.

Project management can be approached in many ways, with training academies and accreditation bodies worldwide offering an array of standards and frameworks (see Project management accreditation – which one is for me?)
With this discussion group we hope we can get to the definition of a simple framework that could help every organisation, helping junior professionals to grow confidently in the profession and proving established project managers, groups and organisation with a tool to “diagnose” and assess their projects, the “context” where they operate and their “way of working”, a framework that can help every project manager ….
